Universitat Polit├Ęcnica de Catalunya (UPC)- Signal Processing for Communications Group

Brief description of the organisation

The Signal Processing and Communications Group (SPCOM) performs research and teaching activities in the Signal Theory and Communications Department (TSC) of UPC. Research activities are focused on three main lines:

  • Personal and Mobile Communications,
  • Ground and On-Board Satellite Processing for Digital Communications, and
  • Satellite Navigation Systems.

These research activities and technology projects are supported by the Spanish and Regional Government, National/International Industries and European projects. The SPCOM group is composed of 4 Professors, 6 Associate Professors and 2 Assistant Professors. and 4 Research Associates. The group is responsible for teaching undergraduate and Master Programs at three Engineering schools and Technical colleges of UPC, and at the Signal Theory and Communications Department Doctoral Program.

Main tasks attributed in the project

WP1: Administrative and financial coordinator.

WP2: Contribute to the definition of the system requirements and the scenarios.

WP4: Network dimensioning and planning. Access network optimization, interconnection with the backhaul and evolution to LTE.

WP7: Scientific dissemination and standardisation activities in 3GPP LTE.

Previous experience relevant to those tasks

UPC has a long record of successful coordinated projects. In 2007, it was ranked the first European University in participation in ICT 7thFP. This group lead the Adaptive Antenna algorithmic development in the ACTS projects TSUNAMI, TSUNAMI(II) and SUNBEAM. As project coordinators, the group promoted MIMO technologies for 3G/4G systems in METRA, I-METRA (5thFP) and SURFACE(7thFP). The group also coordinated projects on, for the first time in IST, relaying and cooperative upgraded 3G networks in ROMANTIK (5thFP) and ROCKET (7thFP). Its experience on heterogeneous and femto-based networks is backed by the coordination of FREEDOM (7thFP). As a result, the group has made up to 10 contributions to 3GPP-LTE, 802.11 and 802.16m. Other participations (not acting as project coordinators) were in the projects SATURN (5thFP), FITNESS (5thFP), EMILY (5thFP), FIREWORKS (5thFP), NEXWAY Thematic Network (6thFP) and WINSOC (7thFP).
